Columbia Market

Situated in the north of Bethnal Green, this imposing building was another of the philanthropic projects of Angela Burdett-Coutts. Designed by Henry Darbyshire it was opened in 1869 and its mixture of permanent shops and traders' stalls was intended to attract costermongers away from the streets. It was a spectacular (and very expensive) failure and closed as a market around 1890. It was badly damaged during World War II and demolished in the 1960s. The majority of traders were fishmongers and vegetable sellers.
