Canary Wharf  

The website of the Canary Wharf Group plc. Short chronology of the history of the Isle of Dogs and lots of information about the new development.


Charles Booth's 1889 Poverty Maps of London  

These maps show each street colour-coded to indicate the economic condition of the inhabitants and can be seen on-line via The University of Michigan site. The maps accompanied his famous social survey of London.


Cockney On Line

East London History Society  

The East London History Society, (founded 1952) exists to further interest in the history of East London, namely the London Boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham.


Greenwood's Map of London 1827  

On-line version of Greenwood's map which covers London and surroundings and stretches out to the River Lea and Greenwich in the East. The map is displayed complete and then in "panels" - you can zoom in and out and move around using control arrows.

The Krays  

Site created "in an attempt to put the record straight about the Krays". Ronnie and Reggie Krays were two notorious gangsters from Vallance Road, Bethnal Green, in the 1960s. One is now dead but Reggie Kray is still in prison. This site is part of a campaign to win his release.


The LDDC History Pages

Ragged School Museum  

The Museum is housed in what was once Dr. Barnardo's Copperfield Road Ragged School.

The East of London Family History Society  

The society aims to "promote and encourage the study of family history amongst those living in or having ancestral links with, that area of Greater London north of the Thames extending from the edge of the City of London at Bishopsgate and Aldgate, eastwards through the London Boroughs of Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Redbridge, Barking and Dagenham, to the edge of Metropolitan Essex at Havering."

97-99 Gallery  

Situated at 97-99 Sclater Street London E1-6HR, this claims to be the longest established private art gallery on Brick Lane. It's "at the forefront of contemporary art in London, showing a variety of British and overseas artists, many showing for the first time in London".


e-base
(Tower Hamlets Community Network)

 

e-base aims to become the first stop on the Internet for information for, about and by the community in Tower Hamlets. They are a volunteer-run non-profit organisations and receive no funding.


Hidden Histories  

Site created by Eastside Community Heritage to bring together the many smaller museums, archives and heritage sites which are hidden away on the East side of London.


Sublime Photography  

On-line gallery of photographs by local photographer, Bob Stuart. The first section, East End Photographs, contains 24 shots, the second, East End Panoramas, contains 3 views: Victoria Park, Greenwich from Island Gardens on the Isle of Dogs, and Canary Wharf and Cascades. Tower Hamlets Trained Bands

 

 

A 17th century re-enactment group who recreate the military activities of the Tower Hamlets Trained Bands, the local civilian militia who were responsible for guarding the Tower of London and for local defence and policing duties in the Tower Hamlets during this period.

 

Whitechapel Mission  

Website of an organisation that has been in operation for over a hundred years, since it was founded by the Revd. Thomas Jackson in 1896. It provides a lifeline for many poor and homeless people in the East End of London.
